Social media is a part of almost every young teenager's life. Social media was developed to make people feel less lonely, and even the shyest people had a chance to communicate, at least through networks. However, today's studies show that they have the opposite effect, mainly due to comparisons that can cause negative feelings. Such comparisons can raise questions about whether a person is as good as others and question their self-worth. These potential feelings can lead to mental illness and problems such as anxiety and depression.
A study published in 2017 in the journal Clinical Psychological Science showed a link between the increasing incidence of depression and the beginning of the use of smartphones. The study's author noted that depression and anxiety syndromes in the research were mainly related to the frequent use of smartphones and led to a greater demand for assistance and counseling centers.
Anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are also experienced by teenage girls, who may have a problem with self-esteem due to the constant surrounds with photos of beautiful girls, who are often groomed and present a false ideal of beauty.
